Italian Football isn’t exactly the same as the NFL.

When starting a coaching career, many coaches will start at the lowest point in an organization to make their way up the ranks. For Dolphins head coach Brian Flores, that start happened in Italy, so he’s used to coaching in Europe.

During his Wednesday media availability, he shared what that experience was like and how it’s different from coaching in the NFL.

“I don’t know how many of you guys know this,” Flores said. “My first coaching job- well, it wasn’t even a job, was with a club team in Italy. Guys were smoking cigarettes at halftime. It’s a little different from what I’m dealing with now. It was a great experience for me and something that I’ll cherish my entire life, coaching for [Briganti Napoli] in Naples, Italy.”

Flores seemed to really appreciate his time there, as this was really the first time he was able to talk about it. He also said he wishes that his players get the experience of traveling overseas and appreciating different cultures in the future.

“I think I’m here, where I am today, coaching, because of that time,” Flores stated.

He definitely has one of the more interesting beginnings to a coaching career that we’ve heard.
