Brett Brown explains Alec Burks’ role: ‘I am giving him the ball’

Philadelphia 76ers coach Brett Brown gives a little more clarity on Alec Burks’ role with the team.

When the Philadelphia 76ers acquired Alec Burks along with Glenn Robinson III from the Golden State Warriors at the trade deadline, they were hoping for Burks to come in and provide some good minutes for them off the bench. However, Burks was not able to play too much with the team before the league halted play and that threw everything up in the air.

Heading into this restart down in Orlando, Burks repeatedly said that he was not sure of his role on the Sixers moving forward. After Friday’s scrimmage win over the Memphis Grizzlies, coach Brett Brown explained how he plans on using Burks down the stretch.

“You look at Alec, I am giving him the ball,” said Brown. “If you look at some of our primary ball carriers, it’s Shake (Milton), a little bit J-Rich (Josh Richardson), but Burks for sure, and then obviously Raul (Neto). The ways that I’m going to use Alec are putting him immediately in pick-and-rolls, spacing the court, and letting him be Alec Burks. He plays downhill, he’s got a streetball type game, he’s excellent at going downhill. He knows how to score.”

Brown mentioned pregame on Friday that there will be a bit of a competition for minutes. Burks played 9:13 against Memphis and he had seven points, three rebounds, and two assists while looking aggressively for his shot that was not there when the league was still operating.

When Philadelphia goes to their bench, they will be looking for reliable scoring options and that’s what Burks offers. He is a career 10.2 points per game scorer and that is something that Brown and the Sixers can rely on. [lawrence-related id=35449,35400,35435]
