The 49ers are trading for Panthers running back Christian McCaffrey. ESPN’s Adam Schefter was first with the report.
NFL Media’s Ian Rapoport reported the Panthers were in talks with the Rams and 49ers about a trade involving multiple Day 2 picks.
The final deal sent McCaffrey to the 49ers in exchange for San Francisco’s 2023 second-round pick, a 2023 third-round pick and a 2023 fourth-round selection. The 49ers will also unload a fifth-round choice in 2024 per Rapoport.
McCaffrey this season has 118 touches for 670 yards and three touchdowns. He’s rushed for 393 yards and two touchdowns on 85 attempts. He’s also hauled in 33 catches for 277 yards and a touchdown.
The Panthers selected McCaffrey No. 8 overall in the 2017 draft out of Stanford. Since joining the NFL he’s played in 64 games and rushed for 3,980 yards and 32 touchdowns. He’s averaged 4.6 yards per carry. McCaffrey is also a receiving threat with 390 catches for 3,292 yards and 18 touchdowns. In 2019 he joined Roger Craig and Marshall Faulk as the only players in NFL history to notch at least 1,000 rushing yards and 1,000 receiving yards in the same season.
