There are many Washington Redskins fans out there who think it would be a good idea for the team to let right guard Brandon Scherff find a new team in free agency this season.
The rest of the NFL seems to agree too, and many teams would love to have a shot at convincing Scherff to meet with them this March, seeing what they could do to secure a future with one of the best RGs in the league.
With just over a month left until the free agency market actually opens, The Athletic ranked the top 100 unrestricted free agents in the league. Scherff came in as the top offensive lineman in the market, No. 18 overall on the list.
“His athleticism makes him one of 10 best offensive linemen in the league at pulling to the edge on sweeps and crack tosses, or even in the screen game. …If he can stay healthy, he’s one of the premier guards in the NFL.”
If the Redskins choose to re-sign him and keep in in Washington — which is something that Scherff said he hopes happens last season — they will likely have to pay a pretty penny for him. When healthy, Scherff is one of the best guards in the league, and he will aim to get paid as such. Philadelphia Eagles RG Brandon Brooks signed a four-year, $56.3 million deal last season, so a Scherff extension would look something like that. The Redskins could also use the franchise tag on him in order to keep him around for a year and do this dance once again in 2021.
