The Brooklyn Nets are turning their attention to 2023-24 as they look to make next season a great one that they hope results in a playoff berth and more. While Brooklyn appears to have it roster set going into training camp, there are some who believe that they still have a critical move to make.
In a recent article by Bleacher Report, Eric Pincus suggested that the Nets should risk trading for Portland Trail Blazers superstar Damian Lillard. What makes this suggestion interesting is that there have been reports throughout the summer that Lillard no longer wants to be traded to Brooklyn because he just wants to play for the Miami Heat.
Brooklyn was rumored to be interested in trading for Lillard when he was still interested in going to the Nets, but was also reported that Brooklyn did not want to trade Mikal Bridges in order to get Lillard. As of right now, if Brooklyn gets involved in any trade for Lillard, it would most likely be as a third team.
Here’s why Pincus believes that the Nets should risk a trade for Lillard:
“The Brooklyn Nets may not be Lillard’s top destination (see Miami Heat), but it’s pretty well-known in NBA circles that he has a strong relationship with Mikal Bridges.
The Nets have an interesting team that, on paper, should be a second-tier playoff team in the Eastern Conference. The most significant need is at guard, where Lillard (one of the best in the league) would shine.
Brooklyn also has an assortment of movable contracts, young players and trade exceptions to facilitate a deal. Veterans such as Spencer Dinwiddie, Dorian Finney-Smith and Royce O’Neale earn enough combined salary to match Lillard’s in trade. Or replace some of the above with youth like Cam Thomas, Day’Ron Sharpe, Dariq Whitehead and/or Noah Clowney.”
