Virginia Tech vs Maryland
QB Taulia Tagovailoa, Maryland: He’s been great at times, but Maryland loses if he struggles and the offense isn’t firing on all cylinders. He threw for close to 3,600 yards with 24 touchdowns and 11 picks, but seven of those interceptions came in a two-game span. Great late in the year, he threw for 300 yards or more in four of the last five games.
S Jordan Mosely, Maryland: Big, rangy, and experienced, the 6-1, 205-pound four-year starter led the team with 78 tackles with seven broken up passes. He’s fine when the ball is in the air, but he’s used like an extra run stopper and factor in the middle of the field. There won’t be many plays behind the line, but he’ll come up with the tackle in the open field.
LB Dax Hollifield, Virginia Tech: The leader of the defense is coming back for another year, and it all starts in this for the team’s top tackler. One of the team’s top statistical performers over his first three years, he cranked it up to another level this season as more of a pass rusher with 4.5 sacks to go along with 88 tackles.
QB Braxton Burmeister, Virginia Tech: The time off before the bowl should be a huge help after playing through bumps and bruises late in the year. The former Oregon Duck is an okay passer, but he doesn’t turn the ball over and he keeps things moving with his legs running for 514 yards and two scores.
