You saw it, we saw it — for a few weeks, the narrative was more or less impossible to avoid in the NBA media. We are of course referring to the idea that gained far more traction than it ever had any business doing that claimed the Boston Celtics were going to need to split up their two star wings, All-Star swingman Jayson Tatum and star forward Jaylen Brown.
Players hear these takes, and while it is common for them to brush off the worse ones when they gain a bit of attention, when they start to dominate the news cycle during (and because of) the Celtics’ struggles to start the 2021-22 campaign, they can become a serious issue all on their own.
Such was the case for Tatum, who recently related on The Volume Network’s “Draymond Green” podcast how much this idea irks him even now, armed with boatloads of evidence he and Brown can play at the highest levels in the regular season so long as they have the right mix of players to back them up.
