At least one member of the Boston Celtics’ roster will be playing long after the end of the 2021 NBA Playoffs’ first round. Veteran shooting guard Evan Fournier is reportedly one of five NBA players who were named to his native France’s national team competing in the 2021 Olympic Games planned to be held this summer in Tokyo, Japan.
No word as of yet from Fournier on the honor specifically, though he did mention in recent postgame comments of his intention to play for his country in the Olympics after the Celtics’ win over the Minnesota Timberwolves in their penultimate contest of the 2020-21 NBA regular season.
“I’ve never missed a chance to play for my country, and this year is not going to be any different,” offered the St. Maurice native.

Fournier will be joined by fellow Frenchmen Rudy Gobert of the Utah Jazz, Nic Batum of the Los Angeles Clippers, Frank Ntilikina of the New York Knicks and Timothe Luwawu-Cabarrot of the Brooklyn Nets should all five elect to play in the Tokyo-based event.
The men’s basketball competition will begin on July 25, just three days after a Game 7 of the NBA Finals would potentially take place.
