Red Sox at Blue Jays: Projected starting pitchers

RHP Chris Mazza vs. LHP Hyun Jin Ryu

Mazza’s performance this season is right in line with how the rest of the Red Sox’s staff has pitched. He’s 0-1 with a 6.35 ERA and seven strikeouts

  • This is Mazza’s third appearance of the season, getting the call up to start Thursday. He’s allowed four runs in 5.2 innings this year.
  • In nine appearances last season with the Mets, Mazza went 1-1 with a 5.51 ERA.

Ryu has hit his stride with Toronto, pitching to a 3.19 ERA with a 2-1 record and 33 strikeouts in 31 innings.

  • Ryu has been dominant in his last four starts, going 2-1 with a 1.23 ERA and 24 strikeouts.
  • Ryu has started two games against the Red Sox in his career. He’s 0-1 with a 3.00 ERA in those starts.

Prediction

Blue Jays 7, Red Sox 4

Moneyline (ML)

After crushing the Red Sox on Wednesday, the Blue Jays are once again heavy favorites in this matchup. The line is -200 in Toronto’s favor, which is one of the most lopsided of the day.

Boston is trotting out Mazza tonight, who is just being called up to start this game. Don’t expect much from him in the way of a strong performance, but the opposite can be said for Ryu. Still, there’s not enough reward and too much risk to bet on the Blue Jays moneyline. I’d PASS and look at the run line.

Run line/Against the spread (ATS)

The Blue Jays are favored by 1.5 runs in this matchup on BetMGM’s recommended line at -121. The Red Sox have given up 16 runs to the Blue Jays in the last two games and have allowed at least five runs in each of their last five games, three of which they lost.

The Blue Jays should win this game by at least a couple of runs, especially if they get out to a good start against Mazza and force the Sox into their bullpen. Take the BLUE JAYS on the run line.

Over/Under (O/U)

The over/under is 10 runs tonight, which these teams have either matched or surpassed in their last two meetings. The total has gone Under in five of the Red Sox’s last seven games but has gone Over in seven of the Blue Jays’ last 10 at home.

Take the OVER (-110) in this game and hope the Red Sox’s bats come alive against Ryu.
