Red Sox at Yankees: Projected starting pitchers

RHP Ryan Weber vs. LHP Jordan Montgomery

Weber will make his fourth start for the Red Sox, an organization he joined in 2019. The 29-year-old right-hander logged three starts and 15 relief appearances en route to posting a 5.09 ERA last year. His 2020 season is off to a rocky start as he allowed nine base runners – including two home runs – in 3 2/3 innings of a 7-4 home loss to the Baltimore Orioles last Sunday.

  • Weber registered two starts last May with 80-plus pitches. He threw 65 pitches in his first start this season.
  • Weber recorded a 3.81 ERA on the road in 2019. He does have trouble with lefties, however (.905 OPS against career). Look for the Yankees to get OFs Brett Gardner and Mike Tauchman and 1B Mike Ford some at-bats Friday.

A year ago, Montgomery stalled in his recovery from Tommy John surgery. He had a solid summer camp, however, and the Yankees are looking to him in spelling SP Luis Severino, who is out for all of 2020 with a TJ surgery of his own. Montgomery logged a 3.84 ERA over 35 starts in 2017-18 before his arm injury.

  • Montgomery impressed in summer camp with an improved fastball velocity.
  • The Red Sox are susceptible to more left-on-left plate appearances than most clubs. In a small sample, Montgomery has held lefty bats to a .583 OPS.

Moneyline (ML)

The Yankees (-200) are the flat-footed lean for sure, but a RED SOX +175 price is solid. It may not last though as a status change for Torres – and/or RP Tommy Kahnle (undisclosed) – would likely to move the number.

Run line/Against the spread (ATS)

We have a high-total good price on the visiting team. BOSTON +1.5 (-110) has some value. New York is -1.5, -110.

Over/Under (O/U)

Consider zagging against a high total here. Start with some faith in Montgomery and tack on the fact the Yankees are coming off a two-gamer at Camden Yards, which for them is like a “Wiffleball” version of Coors Field. TAKE THE UNDER 10.5 (-110).
