New Boston Celtics big men Al Horford and Moses Brown have chosen their jersey numbers for the 2020-21 NBA season per Celtics journalist emeritus Steve Bulpett — formerly of the Boston Herald.
No easy task given the storied history of the franchise — possessing enough retired jerseys to make for its own contentious topic — the choice was an easy one for Horford, who decided to don his former No. 42 worn in his first stint with the team. For Brown, in his first run with the Celtics, the number he decided to wear this coming season is No. 9.
Last worn by Brad Wanamaker and perhaps most famously by Rajan Rondo, Boston’s newest big man will up his own stamp on the jersey.
Al Horford is reclaiming his No. 42, while Moses Brown will wear No. 9 — which some may see as the upside-down of Bill Russell's 6 after his 23 rebounds (19 in the first half) against the Celts last March.
(Then again, Bill *AVERAGED* 23 or more rebounds in 7 straight seasons.)

The frontcourt duo, traded to the Celtics from the Oklahoma City Thunder at the start of Boston’s offseason, aptly mixed a bit of old and new in their representation of the team given their history with the franchise.
