Border War: Vols lead Missouri at halftime

Recapping the first half of the Vols’ game against Missouri.

KNOXVILLE — Tennessee got off to a fast start in its first game at Neyland Stadium in 2020.

The Volunteers jumped out to a 14-0 lead against Missouri as Ty Chandler and Eric Gray had early rushing touchdowns behind an offensive line that featured Georgia transfer and Knoxville Catholic High School graduate Cade Mays. It is Mays’ first game with the Big Orange.

Tennessee running back Eric Gray (3) runs the ball while defended by Missouri safety Tyree Gillespie (9), for a touchdown during the second quarter of a game between Tennessee and Missouri at Neyland Stadium in Knoxville, Tenn., Saturday, Oct. 3, 2020.

Tennessee’s defense was also stout early as the Vols made life miserable for Tigers’ starting quarterback Shawn Robinson.

Missouri head coach Eliah Drinkwitz changed quarterbacks and went to Connor Bazelak. The change netted modest success for the Tigers as Harrison Mevis kicked a pair of field goals to pull Missouri to within 14-6.

After Mevis’ second field goal, a 50-yarder, Tennessee answered when quarterback Jarrett Guarantano threw a 13-yard touchdown pass to Gray to make it 21-6.

The Tigers will get the ball to start the second half.
