Boomer Esiason sees some Patrick Mahomes in Joe Burrow

A Bengals great thinks Joe Burrow could be the next great.

One of the smaller things people in the know talk about when they see Joe Burrow play is his athleticism.

Not his arm, accuracy, ability to make reads or the other usual quarterback stuff. When those in the know talk about the potential next Cincinnati Bengals franchise quarterback, they often point out the multi-sport athleticism that helped him excel in the SEC of all places.

That’s a point Bengals legend Boomer Esiason just raised to Geoff Hobson of Bengals.com while throwing out the name Patrick Mahomes:

“Too much of an athlete. He’s an underappreciated athlete. He reminds me, in that regard, I don’t know if when Patrick Mahomes came out that people knew the kind of athlete he was. Great baseball player. Great basketball player. He kind of found quarterback because it was awesome and great and it was challenging. I think that’s what this kid is. We all do. Those that played the game recognize why we picked this sport. There’s nothing like playing this position. Especially when you’re successful.”

Nobody should need an explanation on Mahomes at this point– same goes for Burrow’s wild success in the SEC.

And while this athleticism and ability to navigate things when everything breaks down doesn’t guarantee Burrow’s success, it is an element of quarterbacking the Bengals have sorely missed for a long time.

If nothing else, it’s comforting to hear that trait is something that could be arriving with Burrow in Cincinnati soon.
