Boise State (18-10, 10-6 MW) has not met with New Mexico (17-11, 6-9 MW) since the two teams played to open the conference season on December 4.

Since then, each team has taken on a markedly different trajectory.

While New Mexico played well through its 18th game, going 15-3, the Lobos have won only 2 more games, dropping eight of their last ten. Boise State, though, has done nearly exactly the opposite in its last ten games, going 7-3 in that stretch.

Considering the slim 80-78 margin of victory in Albuquerque when the Lobos were playing relatively well, it figures that Boise State certainly has the advantage in this one.

Boise State has relied much on scorers Justinian Jessup (16.0 points, 4.3 rebounds, 2.0 assists, 1.3 steals per game) and Derrick Alston (17.0 points, 5.0 rebounds, 3.1 assists per game) alongside the senior who plays much bigger than his 6-7 size suggests, RJ Williams (11.3 points, 8.1 rebounds, 1.0 assist, 1.0 steal per game) who boasts a 64.0% field goal percentage.

With road games being a thing infrequently accomplished in Mountain West play (shout out to the UNLV Runnin’ Rebels), this is another game where things will have to go just right for New Mexico to pull off the win in a season where, halfway through, everything started going wrong.

Led by JaQuan Lyle (15.6 points, 4.2 rebounds, 4.5 assists, 1.4 steals), a critical player on the roster and one of the better passers in the conference, New Mexico will need to bring good ball movement and a less stagnant offense than they have had as of late to have a shot at victory.

A win for Boise State places the Broncos, for the time being, in sole possession of fourth place in the conference standings, while a loss would drop the team to 6th place for now. Independent of what happens, New Mexico will remain in seventh place, but a win would put some much needed space between the Lobos and the Fresno State Bulldogs in an effort to avoid an eight seed in the conference tournament, where they would be on the same side of the bracket as regular season conference champion San Diego State.
