The Boise State Broncos have decided to part ways with head coach Andy Avalos after two-plus seasons with a record of 22-14. The news was first reported by ESPN’s Pete Thamel.

This move is historic for the Broncos as they have never had a coach fired as an FBS program. Every coach dating back to Houston Nutt since 1997 has left to take another job.
Boise State athletics director Dickey made it official with a short statement.
“I am grateful for the passion, effort and dedication Andy has given to our community and his alma mater while serving as our head coach,” Dickey said. “Andy will always be a Bronco and we wish him and his family all the best in their next steps.”
The Broncos are currently 5-5 on the year and there is no guarantee they will make a bowl game with next week’s game at Utah State then hosting Air Force. Both of those teams have flaws and the Falcons seem to have fallen off a cliff lately.
However, with the oddness of the tiebreakers and no divisions, there is a weird backdoor path for Boise State to reach the title game.
The problem is that it is far-fetched and the Broncos are used to being in control and not relying on other teams’ outcomes to reach their goals.

This year has been frustrating for Broncos fans with Avalos getting pummeled by Washington — which might not be bad considering they are really, really good. Losing games at home has been a problem under his tenure. Avalos’ record on the blue was just 8-6 and that is not great considering the home field advantage that the Broncos were making.
This move seems to be more than a year in the making as things got weird after Boise State fell to UTEP last year and it started a change in events with players transferring and assistants being let go.
Avalos is one year removed from a 10-4 record, making the conference title game, and earning coach of the year honors in the Mountain West.
The standard is high at Boise State, so we will see what is next.
