Three-star defensive lineman Shone Washington was in Gainesville over the weekend on an official visit, and Florida appears to still be in play despite a commitment to Georgia in November.
Washington already had an offer from Florida when he chose UGA, but meeting Billy Napier and being offered again by the new staff has him split between the two bitter rivals, according to All Gators. With plans to announce his decision during the early signing period, Washington is leaving plenty of room for speculation.
“I’m gonna go home and think about both schools, and I’ll have my answer by Wednesday,” Washington said. “It’s a race. Right now, you know, it’s 50-50.”
Florida needs defensive tackles and the new staff has made a good impression on the 6-foot-3-inch, 297-pound lineman. Running backs coach Jabbar Juluke and Kevin Bolden helped get Washington out to Florida. Being from Lousiana, Washington immediately felt a connection with many of the new coaches, including Napier.
Flipping Washington from Georgia would be a huge win for Florida’s new coach. Several players have decommitted since he was hired and current players continue to enter the transfer portal. A win over Kirby Smart would be a breath of fresh air and begin to prove to Gators fans that Napier’s Louisiana ties will be useful in recruiting.
247Sports has Washington ranked No. 468 nationally on the Composite List and No. 65 for defensive linemen. He plans to make his decision around 1 p.m. EST on Dec. 15.
