With the Miami Dolphins’ current cap situation, their free agent spending may be a little light this offseason. However, there’s work that could be done to free up cap space and allow for some signings.
One pending free agent, Buffalo Bills safety Jordan Poyer, has been someone that fans have connected to Miami due to his strong performances in the division.
Poyer, on his podcast, spoke about his free agency plans, and it seems like South Florida may be a place that works for him.
“I’d love to go a state that doesn’t take half my money,” Poyer said, referencing New York’s state income tax – a problem that would be solved in Florida.
On top of the money, there’s also the weather factor. “It would be nice to see the sun, maybe every week or so — every other week at least,” he said.
This past weekend, Poyer actually spent time with his good friend Tua Tagovailoa, who celebrated his upcoming 25th birthday.
“A lot of Bills fans won’t like that I am friends with Tua,” Poyer said. “I’m going to his birthday party this weekend. I am excited about that.
“Tua and I met, I want to say, not the last offseason, but the offseason before. I went out to a golf course that he was a member at… I hit him up on Instagram and was like, yo, if you ever need someone to golf with, let’s go play. That offseason, we probably played ten rounds together. Last offseason, probably about the same… He came to my golf event at the end of last offseason. Really good dude, man. Huge fan of Tua.”
The safety even went as far as to mention Miami as a potential landing spot for him in 2023, citing his past with head coach Mike McDaniel.
“It would be crazy to stay in the [AFC] East — to come down here to South Florida, so I might have to put my best suit on, put a nice little tie on,” Poyer said. “I know Mike McDaniel will be in there. Mike McDaniel and I go back to Cleveland. He probably don’t even remember me on that team.”
Defensive coordinator Vic Fangio’s unit could definitely benefit from adding a talented defensive back like Poyer. Plus, taking him away from a division rival would make the move even sweeter.
