New England Patriots offensive coordinator Bill O’Brien’s first order of business is forgetting about the 2022 season.
That seemed to be the point of emphasis as he addressed media members for the first time since returning to New England on Tuesday. The words “clean slate” were used several times times by O’Brien, who will be tasked with getting the offense back on track in 2023.
New England clearly needs a clean slate considering the way the team imploded last season. There was reported drama behind the scenes involving coach Bill Belichick and quarterback Mac Jones.
The offense was an absolute mess after Belichick’s decision to put Matt Patricia in charge of offensive play-calling, which led to the team failing to make the playoffs for a second time in the last three years. However, none of that matters at this point.
It’s a new year with brand new offensive coaches overseeing things in New England. It’s time to leave everything else in the past. So O’Brien is making “clean slate” the motto for the Patriots in 2023.
New #Patriots offensive coordinator Bill O’Brien said the words “clean slate” several times in his first presser since returning to New England. Added that’s the motto for the group this year, “moving forward.”

The Patriots could use less drama and better production on the football field, particularly on the offensive side of the ball. Belichick is putting the pieces in place, starting at the top with O’Brien and offensive line coach Adrian Klemm.
But it’ll ultimately come down to Jones and the offense to execute for real change to take effect.
