Bill O’Brien remains non-committal on Malik Cunningham role

Bill O’Brien had some interesting comments on Malik Cunningham’s role in the Patriots offense.

New England Patriots offensive coordinator Bill O’Brien would not commit to a specific role for quarterback Malik Cunningham, while offering some backstory from the rookie quarterback’s college days.

O’Brien indicated that he worked with Cunningham as both a receiver and a passer.

Cunningham has played mostly as a receiver in New England, according to O’Brien. However, the Louisville product has seen game action as a quarterback for the Patriots. He appeared in the October 15 contest against the Las Vegas Raiders. He did not attempt a pass and was sacked in the game.

On Wednesday, he was seen working in at quarterback with fellow backup Bailey Zappe.

It’s interesting that O’Brien would comment about how hard it is learning both positions, when that’s exactly what the Patriots are doing with Cunningham.

His actual role has been a mystery all season, and it doesn’t appear as though a definitive answer will come anytime soon.
