Bill Belichick shrugs off concerns about life after Tom Brady

“Well, we’ve played at other times without Tom.”

Tom Brady’s departure from the New England Patriots has become the most redundant storyline of the 2020 NFL season so far.

Along with many other conversations, it has sparked the debate on who’ll thrive without the other — Brady or Bill Belichick. Brady now has an unreal amount of weapons with the Tampa Bay Buccaneers and Belichick’s team has regressed. More concern pops up around Belichick’s ability to turn second-year quarterback Jarrett Stidham into a player who can lead the team to a winning season.

Belichick spoke about life after Brady on Thursday night and didn’t seem to be overly concerned about the transition.

“Well, we’ve played at other times without Tom,” Belichick said. “Whether it was the (2008) season after he was injured — we played 15 games with (Matt) Cassel and went 11-5 — or heading into the ’16 season with Jimmy (Garoppolo) and then Jacoby (Brissett) and Tom coming back after the four-game suspension.

“So there have been other times where we’ve dealt with that. We’ll do what we always do, which is try to prepare the team the best that we can, utilize our players and the skills that they have and put ourselves in the best position we can to be competitive and win. That’s what we always do, and we’ll continue to do that.”

New England has one of the most difficult schedules in the NFL in 2020, giving Belichick and extremely tall task ahead of him.
