There have been some positives about this New England Patriots season, but there have also been some negatives. One of them has been the play of the tight ends.
During his appearance on the Ordway, Merloni, and Fauria Show on WEEI, Bill Belichick was very candid when talking about a lack of production at the position.
Statistically, nothing jumps out from the Patriots tight end position. For instance, Ryan Izzo caught three passes for 38 yards on Sunday. The three catches matches his best total from the 2019 season.
In the meantime, Devin Asiasi and Dalton Keene have yet to make much of an impact. Asiasi played 42.1% of offensive snaps while Keene was inactive for the game.
This carries over a bit from the 2019 season, as New England do not get much from the position last year as well. Belichick knows this, and would like to see more production from the position. The Patriots are last in the league with six receptions by tight ends this season.
“Overall, we need more production offensively, period,” Belichick said. “We only had 14 first downs (in Sunday’s 18-12 loss to the Denver Broncos). I think we probably had more production out of the tight end position in this game than we’ve had all year.”
It will be interesting to see if New England involves the tight end position a little bit more against the 49ers. It would be wise to involve the tight ends in the game plan, especially with the outside wide receivers hitting a bit of a rough patch.
