Bill Belichick makes a splash with latest addition to UNC football coaching staff

Who is the latest addition to Bill Belichick’s coaching staff?

Despite struggling through their regular season, the North Carolina Tar Heels have a ton of excitement within their football program right now.

On Wednesday, December 11, UNC hit a home run and hired Bill Belichick as its next head football coach. Belichick was initially thought of as a surprise candidate, but after a second interview, it became clear North Carolina was serious about hiring the 8-time Super Bowl Champion.

With Belichick now in charge, he is tasked with filling out his coaching staff. That includes defensive coordinator, a spot Belichick just filled.

On Sunday, Dec. 22, On3 Sports’ Alex Byington reported that Steve Belichick is expected to join Bill in Chapel Hill.

If you don’t know already, or the last name didn’t give it away, Steve is Bill’s eldest of two sons.

Steve’s move to coach the Tar Heels was expected, as a rumored contingent of Bill’s initial hiring was Steve taking over – when Bill retires.

Steve is currently the Washington Huskies’ defensive coordinator – and will finish out their season. Washington (6-6) will play Louisville in the Tony The Tiger Sun Bowl on New Year’s Eve.

Despite the Huskies struggling in their first season after appearing in January’s National Championship game, Steve Belichick drastically improved their defense. According to the On3 Sports article we linked above, Washington’s defense improved from 99th last season (406.7 YPG) to 26th (324.8 YPG) this year.

UNC’s defense was yet another massive disappointment this season, allowing 377 yards per game, but slightly-improved from 404.4 yards per game in 2023.

Steve spent 2012-2023 with the New England Patriots – and now, he’ll get to join his father again.
