When Cam Newton signed with New England back in June, there was plenty of speculation on how the signing would work. This was specifically the case with his relationship with head coach Bill Belichick.
Newton’s been known as an eccentric quarterback who does a lot of celebrating and likes to have fun on the field. Belichick isn’t exactly viewed in the same light.
However, after their first win of the season over the Miami Dolphins, Newton expressed that he believes that his expectations of Belichick weren’t exactly what he’s received since his arrival.
During his weekly spot on “The Greg Hill Show” on WEEI, Newton explained how he feels about his new head coach.
“He makes the smartest players more cerebral,” Newton said. He’s the ultimate teacher and I just respect that… I didn’t know what to expect coming in here. You hear stories. I’ve just been blown away.”
Despite coming from an organization that’s dealt with their own issues in the past few years, Newton always had Ron Rivera who many consider a great leader.
While Rivera is held in that regard, he likely isn’t the strategist or preparer that Belichick is. To have someone who can challenge you in so many ways and get you to be the best version of yourself should be a great gift for Newton.
The 31-year-old may have brought New England to a victory in their first game of the 2020 campaign, but he’ll have to do a lot more to defeat the Seattle Seahawks on Sunday night. That push and preparation from Belichick should help the quarterback be ready for such a task.
