New England Patriots coach Bill Belichick provided an update on the health status of starting right guard Mike Onwenu on Monday.
Onwenu, who is currently on the PUP list, is being considered day-by-day with no concrete news on his availability for the season opener on September 10.
The fact that Onwenu is day-to-day shows progress, but there are still concerns he might not be back in time for the opener against the Philadelphia Eagles. He had a major part on the New England offensive line last season after moving to right guard. The fourth-year lineman finished with a 79.3 overall PFF.com grade, while also ranking as one of the top-10 best players at the position ahead of the 2023 season.
Belichick said Mike Onwenu is “day to day.” No word on whether he’s expected back from PUP in time for Week 1.

Riley Reiff worked in at right guard at a recent training camp practice. That could be the Patriots’ way of shoring up a potential hole along the offensive front with a reliable veteran in Onwenu’s place.
It isn’t necessarily ideal, but it might be the best option the Patriots have right now.
