Big 12 conference still mulling over 2020 season: ‘Decisions haven’t been made yet’

The Big 10 was and may still be ready to pull the plug on a fall college football season.

That doesn’t mean other conferences have to do the same, and the Big 12 is nowhere near ready for that decision it appears.

“I don’t have anything other than our (medical) experts’ opinions to draw upon,” said Big 12 commissioner Bob Bowlsby told Kirk Bohls of the Austin American Statesman. “Have we made progress? Probably not. Have they told us to shut it all down? No, they have not.”

Bowlsby has been steadfast that a decision on a season doesn’t have to be rushed. The Big 12 is listening closely to its medical personnel in order to make the best and safest decision it can.

“We’ve always felt a sense of urgency,” he said. “But the last 30 days have not been a positive trend. There’s never been a drop-dead date. It’s always been situational. The virus decides what we do.”

Ultimately, he can advise, but the decision is up to the board of directors.

“Any decisions are up to our boards,” he said. “Decisions haven’t been made yet. We wanted to get in some practices and see what it looks like with the players in helmets and shoulder pads on.”

The Big 12 Conference, its school presidents and board of directors are scheduled to meet on Tuesday.
