Big 12 Conference announces football game cancellation thresholds for 2020

One of the final touches for the football season threshold for games being cancelled due to players being out due to COVID-19.

One of the final touches for a football season in a pandemic was the threshold for games being cancelled due to players being out for a positive test or contact tracing.

The Big 12 Conference decided to let its numbers be known late Friday afternoon.

The minimum number of players to play a game is set at 53. This includes scholarship players and all the walk-ons.

A minimum number of available players at certain positions also exists. A team must have seven offensive lineman, four interior defensive lineman and one quarterback available.

The Big 12 put in bye weeks of its nine-game conference schedule for a reason—if a game receives a no-contest due to the minimum threshold being exhausted, the schedule provides two open weeks and the Big 12 Championship can get moved back a week if needed.

Big 12 teams will kickoff the 2020 season this Saturday with conference play beginning on Sept. 26. Oklahoma hosts Missouri State on Sept. 12 at 6 p.m. CT.
