Bengals surprise with release of DE Raymond Johnson III

A preseason breakout gets released by the Bengals.

The Cincinnati Bengals have turned in their first shocking release of Tuesday’s cut-down process by letting defensive end Raymond Johnson walk.

As KPRC2’s Aaron Wilson noted when reporting the move, Johnson had the third-highest PFF grade amongst edge defenders during the preseason.

The Bengals would obviously like to have Johnson back as a member of the practice squad, but his breakout surely didn’t go unnoticed by other teams. But the Bengals already had great depth at the spot, to the point first-rounder Myles Murphy might not even be active on game day early in 2023.

It’s a risk, though one the Bengals felt they had to take.
