The New Orleans Saints released Margus Hunt to make room in the lineup for Marcus Davenport, so Hunt re-signed with the Cincinnati Bengals.

Margus Hunt found himself on the free agent market after bouncing on and off of the New Orleans Saints practice squad early this season, but he ended up getting a call from a familiar area code. The Cincinnati Bengals announced Monday that they re-signed their former second-round NFL draft pick, and he should immediately earn minutes in the rotation along their talent-thin defensive line.

This wasn’t something that caught the Saints by surprise. Hunt visited with the Bengals last week, prompting New Orleans to host a couple of free agents for tryouts on Friday. Still, he’ll be missed: Hunt totaled 114 snaps in the first four games (84 on defense, 20 on special teams) and came through in a big spot with a deflected field goal back in Week 1.

So maybe the Saints could sign one of those free agents to the practice squad to round out the group. The active roster has been featuring a platoon of Cameron Jordan, Trey Hendrickson, Carl Granderson, and Marcus Davenport, and they have reserves waiting on the practice squad in Anthony Zettel and Marcus Willoughby. But just 15 of the 16 spots are filled, so an addition to the practice squad could be coming. Stay tuned.
