A.J. Green’s season is officially over.

With one game left on the schedule, the Cincinnati Bengals decided to shut down their star receiver by sending him to injured reserve. Injuries suffered during Sunday’s loss to Miami forced the team’s hand.

Green had hinted last week he wouldn’t play at all this year after a visit with a specialist told him the foot injury suffered on the first day of training camp wouldn’t negatively affect his offseason.

Speaking of the offseason, Green is scheduled to be a free agent after he and the Bengals haven’t overcome an impasse on a potential extension. The franchise tag could be in play, yet Green has said it would show a lack of commitment.

Green hardly practiced this year, let alone got in a game. He technically played in nine a season ago and also missed six games in 2016. He says the plan is to play five more years, though whether those occur with the Bengals remains a big question.
