New Cincinnati Bengals offensive tackle Trent Brown has been a commonly listed cut candidate this offseason.
Brown, who signed a one-year pact for $4.75 million with the team this offseason, has some pressure from first-round rookie Amarius Mims and his own injury history to worry about at right tackle.
Those are common reasons that come up again as Bleacher Report’s Gary Davenport listed possible roster bubble members during training camps:
Brown didn’t sign with the Bengals for big money. But he signed with the expectation that he’d start. Being relegated to “swing” duty may not sit especially well with a 10th-year veteran who has been to a Pro Bowl and won a Super Bowl.
Brown missed the early portion of spring work for specific reasons, too, so that fueled some of the conversations around the roster bubble in past months.
Truthfully, though, Mims could end up winning the right tackle job and the team wouldn’t be likely to move on from Brown, given its struggles along the line in recent years.
Brown might not love that outcome, of course, but the Bengals aren’t hurting for cap space nearly enough to lose such a valuable swing backup, either.
