Many fans, obviously, wish the Cincinnati Bengals operated differently when it comes to building a team, especially with Joe Burrow’s MVP-level season going to waste.
Turns out plenty of former players feel the same way.
Andrew Whitworth is a prime example, stressing this point in a recent interview with ESPN’s Kevin Clark.
“Yeah I do. And I understand the constraints of being in a smaller market over time,” Whitworth said. “Do you always have to live that world? Look what the Los Angeles Rams did when they won the Super Bowl.”
Whitworth pointed out that the current NFL and the ever-rising salary cap make it easier to make big swings.
And he brings up the Rams not just because he played there but because it was super obvious when ownership attempted to go all-in around a certain group of guys to win it all despite it likely hurting future years.
By comparison, the Bengals like to remain steady and keep those future years steady, too. They’ve had splash signings in the past like Trey Hendrickson, DJ Reader and Orlando Brown Jr., but never that all-in sense that is almost reckless about future years.
That’s not how the Bengals like to do business. But in hindsight? This would have been a pretty great year to do it.
