The Bengals have a ton of money invested in WR but it remains a need.

The Cincinnati Bengals have a ton of money invested in the wide receiver position.

And that shouldn’t stop them from addressing it in the 2020 NFL draft.

According to Spotrac’s numbers, the Bengals have the most money wrapped up in wideouts at $38 million. It’s not too surprising with A.J. Green’s $17.865 million cap hit on the franchise tag and Tyler Boyd’s cap hit of more than $8 million. Don’t forget John Ross checking in above the $5 million mark.

Yet despite the league-leading number, it would probably be smart for the Bengals to invest a draft pick or two at the position too.

Green, after all, remains a major question mark from an attendance standpoint. Ross generally stands as a question mark. Besides Boyd, there hasn’t been anything consistent about the wideout room.

And here’s the reality — that current $38 million or so number on wideouts dips to $9.9 million next offseason with just two wideouts not heading to free agency.

The good news? The Bengals can reverse some of this by getting Green an extension — and they’re closer with him than they are Joe Mixon. They’re also heading into what looks like one of the deepest wideout classes of the last 10 or so years — meaning a good one could even be available well into the third round.

As is always the case, numbers can lie. And here, wideout is clearly a long-term issue for the Bengals despite the prominent numbers.
