The Cincinnati Bengals will unveil a jersey redesign this offseason.
Mike Brown went out of his way to make it clear the team wouldn’t change up the iconic striped helmets.
But what if the NFL changes an older rule and permits the use of more than one helmet?
It’s easy to forget because it was such a small thing during a wild offseason, but last March, Tampa Bay Buccaneers head coach Bruce Arians let slip that the NFL might change its “one shell rule” during the 2021 offseason.
“Once the helmet rule changes next year, we might have some Creamsicles and some throwbacks, which I think, are the best uniforms in the league,” Arians said, according to CBS Sports’ John Breech.
Arians was talking about how the Buccaneers couldn’t pull off the classical throwbacks a few times a year because it wouldn’t look right without changing the helmets too. But NFL rules state teams can only use one helmet per year.
But if that rule changes, suddenly the Bengals have some amazing possibilities to go with their new jerseys.
Primarily, we’re talking about the three here, via Bengals Jim:
Here are our three helmet options with new uniforms 🤞🏽
1) White/Black Stripes – Color Rush uni
2) BENGALS – 70’s era uni combo
3) Orange/Stripes – new uni’s and 80’s throw back #Bengals | #SeizeTheDEY #CincinnatiFootballHistory pic.twitter.com/fzhVrvySFf— Bengal Jim’s BTR (@bengaljims_BTR) January 21, 2021
If the jersey redesigns have a more classical look, a throwback-helmet week would be amazing. So would swapping the orange and black for white and black to go with the wildly popular “Color Rush” jerseys once or twice a year.
We’ll have to wait and see if the NFL modifies the “one shell” rule this offseason. But with news of Bengals redesigning jerseys, it’s suddenly one of the most interesting things to watch for this offseason. Until then, we’ll just have to enjoy some of the amazing Bengals jersey redesign ideas fans have shared.
