The Cincinnati Bengals will again find themselves with some new rules available to them this weekend as the team marches toward kickoff against the Los Angeles Chargers.
Cincinnati already benefitted from an expanded 16-player practice squad. They get to protect four players on it from waiver claims every week and already announced who they’d protect for Week 1.
Another new wrinkle to the rules kicks in this weekend — the Bengals are permitted by league rules to call up two players from the practice squad for the game without exposing them to waivers.
Based on the full practice squad, a likely callup would be one of the defensive linemen or a member of the secondary. With Geno Atkins ruled out along the line and secondary members like Shawn Williams hurting, a callup could find himself active on the 53 for gameday as insurance.
It’s a small development to keep in mind as the Bengals likely benefit in the depth department from a rule change.
