The Cincinnati Bengals announced the return of linebacker Jordan Evans on a one-year deal Sunday.

Evans, a 2017 sixth-round pick, emerged as a core special-teams piece for Darrin Simmons last year as the roster turnover continues and gets back with the team for another season on that basis.

While he never really broke through in the base defense and the team has since gone other directions there, Evans has a key role on a unit that continues to lose some continuity.

With rumors about a Giovani Bernard trade making the rounds and Randy Bullock signing elsewhere, the turnover for Simmons’ unit will continue this offseason.

Locking down Evans now is a good way to lessen some of the impact there before onboarding another rookie class.
