Cincinnati Bengals quarterback Joe Burrow is a hot topic ahead of the 2023 season starting.
Most of that stems from the conversations about his return from injury. Oh, and the curious case of his lack of a contract extension.
But part of it is just how high his ceiling is, too.
ESPN’s Seth Walder, while outlining depth charts, sleepers and more for each team, had a bold prediction when it comes to Burrow:
Bold prediction for 2023: Burrow will set the new standard for completion percentage over expectation (CPOE), beating out Matt Ryan’s plus-8.3% in 2016. Burrow’s elite trait is accuracy — he led the league in CPOE in 2021 with a plus-6%, and he has exceptional receivers yet again. That will allow him to establish the highest mark in the metric, which was developed by NFL Next Gen Stats in 2016. — Walder
Burrow hitting this sort of achievement would almost certainly have him in the MVP conversation again.
The Bengals have helped Burrow get closer to this sort of bold prediction with the addition of a more dynamic tight end in the form of Irv Smith Jr. and the best offensive line to date with Orlando Brown Jr. at left tackle and Jonah Williams shifted to the right side.
