The Chicago Bears have a new QB2, and it’s probably the most excited the fanbase has felt since the season kicked off.
According to NFL Network’s Ian Rapoport, the Bears are promoting rookie Tyson Bagent to their backup quarterback “moving forward.” He’ll be active for the first time against the Denver Broncos.
Bagent replaces veteran Nathan Peterman, who served as Justin Fields’ backup quarterback for the first three games.
Rapoport explained why the team is making the move:
The decision has nothing to do with Fields’ standing, but it does have to do with a young, promising QB deserving a promotion from No. 3 to No. 2.
Bagent was a training camp and preseason standout for Chicago, where he worked his way from fourth on the depth chart to second behind Fields by preseason’s end.
While Bagent was among the two quarterbacks to make the active roster, the Bears brought back Peterman to serve as a veteran presence. Now, it’s clear they believe Bagent can go into a game and play, if needed.
With Fields’ future in question, it wouldn’t be a surprise to see Bagent at some point this season. If things continue to spiral for this team, they owe it to themselves, this fanbase and Bagent to see what they have in the undrafted rookie out of Shepherd.
