Allen Robinson has already voiced his desire to remain with the Chicago Bears for the long haul. Now, the ball is in Ryan Pace’s court.
Robinson has one year remaining on his original three-year, $42-million deal, and the Bears need to make it a priority to lock down the one consistent player from their struggling offense last season.
When Pace addressed the media at the NFL Scouting Combine, he was asked about whether there had been discussions about an extension for Robinson.
“We keep those things inside, but it’s obviously something we’ve talked about,” Pace said. “He’s a good player and does a lot for our team on and off the field and he’s a guy we’d like to have a Bear for a long time.”
Robinson was the lone bright spot on Chicago’s abysmal offense in 2019. He caught 98 passes for 1,147 yards and seven touchdowns in 2019. But perhaps more impressive was that Robinson was able to put together an impressive season with questionable quarterback play and a slew of offensive deficiencies.
Obviously, the Bears have several needs to address this offseason and not a whole lot of salary cap space to do it. Which would obviously make it difficult to extend Robinson in their current situation.
But the Bears need to find a way to keep the best thing that their offense has going for it, and that means finding a way to extend Robinson.
