The fifth-year option amounts have been announced for first-round picks from the 2018 NFL draft.
The big question when it comes to those options revolves around the No. 1 overall pick, former Oklahoma Sooners quarterback Baker Mayfield. The fifth-year option only applies to first-round selections.
Mayfield’s number will be $18.858 million according to Cleveland.com, the deadline for the option is May 3rd. This upcoming season, the former Heisman Trophy-winning quarterback will make $10.569 million according to Overthecap.com.
This past season, Mayfield forced his way into the conversation with his performance in 2020. After two sub-par seasons in Cleveland in which the Browns finished just 12-17 as a starter. Mayfield would lead them to an 11-5 regular season record. In the first two seasons he threw 49 touchdowns to 35 total interceptions.
In 2020, Mayfield cut down his interceptions to just eight while throwing for 3,563 yards and 26 touchdowns. He led the team to the playoffs for the first time since 2002, and a playoff win for the first time since Jan. 1, 1995. Given the growth of Mayfield and the history setting season in Cleveland, the quarterback is set to make $18.858 million. In today’s NFL that is a bargain for a starting quarterback, but there will be a discussion on his long-term contract.
