The Cleveland Browns will not have QB Baker Mayfield for the final game of the 2021 NFL season. Head coach Kevin Stefanski noted in his media availability that the quarterback and the team made the decision that they felt was best for the player.
Stefanski said that Mayfield would seek to have surgery on his shoulder as soon as possible. Previous reports were that the recovery from the surgery would take months.
With Mayfield out for Week 18, Case Keenum is likely to start against the Cincinnati Bengals. The game could have meaning for the visiting Bengals and impact both the Browns draft position as well as who they face on the schedule in 2022.
Mayfield tore his labrum early in the season but attempted to gut it out through the problem with a harness on his shoulder. His performance this season has led to questions about his future with the team. With a roster set up to succeed quickly, the team is likely to seek an upgrade if possible.
