Baker Mayfield says Bucs’ new offense is ‘mentally taxing’

Tampa Bay Buccaneers quarterback Baker Mayfield says the short-term challenge of learning the complex scheme will pay off down the road

For the second year in a row, the Baker Mayfield and the Tampa Bay Buccaneers will be breaking in a new offensive coordinator.

Dave Canales left after just one season to become the head coach of the division-rival Carolina Panthers, and he’s been replaced by Liam Coen, who spent last season calling plays at the college level for the Kentucky Wildcats.

Mayfield has history with Coen, as both spent time with the Los Angeles Rams in 2022, but the Bucs’ starting quarterback says the team’s new offense is still a challenge at the outset.

Speaking to the media during Organized Team Activities (OTAs) on Tuesday, Mayfield said the hard work they put in now to learn the complex scheme will pay off in the long run, though:

Mayfield had the best season of his career last year, earning Pro Bowl honors and leading the Bucs to a third straight NFC South title. If they can gain command of Coen’s offense throughout the offseason, it should allow them to frustrate opposing defenses on their way to another banner in 2024.
