Badgers in the NFL: JJ Watt returns to practice, will play in playoffs

Former Wisconsin Badgers defensive tackle J.J. Watt returned to practice for the Texans, and hopes to play in the playoffs.

Former Wisconsin Badgers defensive tackle J.J. Watt has been designated to return to practice off the injured reserve, and expects to play in Houston’s first playoff game.

“I feel extremely excited about being able to be back on the practice field with the guys,” Watt told ESPN reporter Sarah Barshop. “The medical team here has done a great job. There’s obviously an element of risk involved as well. I understand. But to me, the opportunity to play in the playoffs, the opportunity to try and help this team win football games … there’s nothing that I want more.”

Watt tore a muscle in his pec back in Week 8 against the Raiders, and had surgery just two days later. He said he needs to see how things go in practice, but anticipates he should be able to return to the field when the Texans host a playoff game in January.

Typical recovery time for a torn pec is three to four months, making Watt’s return considerably ahead of schedule.
