There was a chance this offseason the 49ers might’ve seen the last of Aaron Donald. The Rams defensive tackle considered taking his Super Bowl trophy and retiring this offseason according to NFL Media’s Mike Garafolo. Instead, he’s returning with a massive new contract.
NFL Media’s Ian Rapoport on Monday reported Donald, 31, signed a new three-year contract that will keep him in Los Angeles through the 2024 season. That deal is worth a whopping $95 million.
The Rams’ cap machinations and Donald’s salary don’t matter much to San Francisco. What does matter is they’ll be dealing with one of the NFL’s premier game wreckers twice a year for at least three more seasons.
While the reigning division champs shore up the interior of their defensive line, the 49ers have three gaping holes on the interior of their offensive line. San Francisco will spend the rest of this offseason trying to find a starting center and two starting guards.
Donald and the Rams have an early visit to Levi’s Stadium this year when the 49ers host them for Monday Night Football in Week 4.
