Aztecs Land Sharpshooting Grad Transfer Terrell Gomez

The Aztecs have just signed a scoring phenom.

Brian Dutcher is very excited that Terrell “Go Go” Gomez is bringing his elite basketball skills to the Mesa.

Cal State University Northridge grad transfer Terrell Gomez will play for the San Diego State Aztecs next season. The 5’8″ guard is extraordinarily mighty. He’s one of the best perimeter shooters in the nation. He is the best free throw shooter in the nation. Gomez has a shot style that combines speed and rapid release to score consistently.

If the basketball is in his hands he is a serious threat.

Gomez achieved CSUN’s school record of 293 for 3-pointers while shooting 43.6 percent. That’s remarkably efficient for a high volume scorer. Last season he managed a solid 44 percent from behind the arc, while averaging 19.8 points on 14.8 shots per game- the eighth best in Division I. He also led the nation in free-throw accuracy scoring 109 of 115. That’s 94.8 percent…

As for ball handling: Gomez had a turnover rate lower than NCAA All-American Malachi Flynn.

Mighty indeed.

So how did Gomez arrive at the Mesa?

Two years ago, CSUN played the Aztecs at Viejas Arena. According to Gomez “The energy was crazy.” It was at that moment that perhaps the seed was planted. “Go Go” Gomez wanted to play for the Aztecs in the electric Viejas Arena atmosphere, and it doesn’t hurt that SDSU is one of the nation’s top basketball teams right now.

His short list of other universities also included Arkansas, Iowa State and Washington State.

For now Coach Eric Musselman will have to keep his shirt on. Musselman has an eye for exceptional players, and Gomez was right on his radar. Oh well. As for San Diego State: Coach Brian Dutcher couldn’t be happier.

The Aztecs are also eyeing up Loyola-Maryland’s Mattias Markusson to potentially take over for front court dazzler Yanni Wetzell. The 7-foot-3 grad transfer would bring size to the roster- and he averaged 10.2 points and 6.3 rebounds two seasons ago.

But for now, whether Flynn returns for another season as we all hope, or if the NBA commands his talents, the Aztecs will have a play caller or two to hold court.
