Auburn takes small step forward in latest USA TODAY Sports re-rank

The Tigers crack the top-40 after its impressive win over Alabama A&M last Saturday.

Auburn football earned confidence last Saturday by taking down in-state foe Alabama A&M, 73-3, to open the 2024 season. Now, the Tigers are beginning to trend upward in terms of rankings.

Paul Myerberg of USA TODAY Sports released his weekly “re-rank” following the first full weekend of college football action, and has given Auburn a slight bump. The Tigers begin the week at No. 40 ahead of its showdown with California at Jordan-Hare Stadium on Saturday, up three places from last week’s debut.

Auburn is one of 10 SEC teams to crack the top 40 this week, and seven of those programs are seeing an increase in their ranking. Joining Auburn in moving forward this week are Alabama (No. 5 to No. 4), Ole Miss (No. 10 to No. 8), Tennessee (No. 13 to No. 11), Oklahoma (No. 14 to No. 12), Missouri (No. 21 to No. 20), and Kentucky (No. 39 to No. 38).

LSU fell 10 spots to No. 16 after its 27-20 loss to USC on Sunday, and Texas A&M fell five places to No. 34 after dropping its season-opening contest to Notre Dame. Georgia and Texas remain at No. 1 and No. 3 respectively.

Auburn’s next opponent, California, advanced five places to No. 79 after a 31-13 season-opening win over UC Davis last Saturday.
