Auburn’s loss to California was unexpected; the proof can be seen in the rankings.
The Tigers dropped out of top-25 consideration in the US LBM Coaches Poll following Saturday’s 21-14 loss to the Golden Bears. Auburn was outside of the top 25 of USA TODAY Sports’ weekly re-rank before the game but is now on a downhill slide.
Paul Myerberg of USA TODAY Sports dropped his weekly rankings after week two’s action and has listed Auburn among the biggest drops. Auburn, who began last week at No. 40, has slid down 22 places to No. 62. On the contrary, Cal has jumped 21 spots to No. 58 following the stunning road win.
While Auburn’s fall is quite drastic, it was not the biggest of the week. This week’s title belongs to Kentucky, who dropped a 31-6 home contest to South Carolina last Saturday. Wake Forest, Texas Tech, Wyoming, and Jax State join Auburn and Kentucky in falling at least 20 places in Myerberg’s rankings.
Auburn’s next opponent, New Mexico, remains at No. 129 after losing 61-39 to Arizona over the weekend. The Lobos will enter Jordan-Hare Stadium with a 0-2 record.
