On Thursday afternoon Jake Weingarten posted a tweet that multiple programs had reached out to South Carolina transfer guard Erik Stevenson. Of those programs, Auburn was one. The Washington native would have an immediate impact on the floor if he chose the Tigers.
Throughout his career, Stevenson has played for three different schools. His career began at Wichita State. His freshman season, he started 11 games for the Shockers. He averaged 6.5 points per game for former Wichita State head coach Gregg Marshall. The preceding year he started in 21 games and averaged 11.1 points per game.
After showing improvement from his freshman to sophomore year, he would then transfer to Washington for one season. There, he would average 9.3 points per game. His most recent stop came at South Carolina where he started in all of the games that he played (31). He would go on to average 11.6 points per game and tied for the team lead in rebounds with 4.7 per game.
The Tigers could certainly use a leader like Stevenson. He has SEC experience and certainly knows what it takes to compete at a high level in this league. With the recent loss of Devan Cambridge to the portal, he could certainly ease the pain at the guard/wing position for Auburn. Considering that junior Allen Flanigan may leave as well, his role could be bigger than expected if he elects to go to Auburn.
Other schools like Arkansas, West Virginia, Creighton, Clemson, Ole Miss, and Pitt have reached out as well. If Auburn ends up being his choice, I could definitely see him being a crucial player off the bench. It is likely that any combination of Zep Jasper, K.D. Johnson or Wendell Green Jr. will run the two guard spots. Stevenson has played all over the country, so don’t be surprised if he chooses Bruce Pearl’s Tigers as his next and final destination. He has one year of eligibility remaining.
