Auburn in top five of latest ESPN Power Index Top 25

The Tigers open the season on Sept. 26 against Kentucky in Jordan-Hare Stadium.

Auburn isn’t scheduled to play a game for another three weeks but the Tigers are already making some noise in ESPN’s Power Index Top 25.

Gus Malzahn’s team is ranked at No. 4 in the latest index that was released on Sunday after the first slew of college football games this past weekend.

Auburn is just behind Clemson, Alabama and Georgia in the index while LSU and Florida are right behind them.

From 247Sports:

The word: Surprised to see the Tigers this high? Gus Malzahn’s team rose four spots to No. 4 following the exclusion of Ohio State, Penn State and Wisconsin, a bit of a shock considering Auburn hasn’t been tabbed in the preseason as one of the SEC’s lead title contenders. ESPN’s FPI, however, projects otherwise. There’s a wealth of speed at wideout and offensive changes under Chad Morris should pay off for sophomore signal caller Bo Nix. Watch out for Auburn as a darkhorse title contender.

Kentucky, who the Tigers will face on Sept. 26 in Jordan-Hare Stadium in the season opener, comes in at No. 19.
