Auburn football opens the 2024 season on Saturday against in-state foe Alabama A&M, and ESPN is all but certain that an upset will not take place.
According to the latest data from ESPN’s Football Power Index and matchup predictor, Auburn has a 99% chance to beat Alabama A&M on Saturday to begin the second season of the Hugh Freeze era with a 1-0 record.
Due to Alabama A&M’s FCS status, ESPN’s FPI does not have data to compare both teams. Instead, ESPN looks at betting lines. ESPNBet lists Auburn as the favorite at -47.5 with the over/under set at 56.5. With a spread that wide, it is easy to give Auburn high confidence to earn the win.
Alabama A&M ranked top five in every offensive category last season among SWAC teams. The Bulldogs averaged 29.6 points per game (2nd), 374.6 yards per game (3rd), 153 rushing yards per game (5th), and 221.1 passing yards per game (3rd). Auburn is looking to improve upon its bottom-tier SEC offensive output last season, which saw them produce just 351.23 yards per game, which ranked No. 12 in the SEC.
The Tigers and Bulldogs square off Saturday at 6:30 p.m. CT at Jordan-Hare Stadium.
