Auburn football still ranks high on ESPN’s Football Power Index following Week 0 games

ESPN still favors Auburn in the latest FPI rankings.

After an offseason of negativity that saw Auburn receive pessimistic projections from the national media, it was a refreshing surprise to see Auburn ranked in the preseason top-10 of ESPN’s Football Power Index.

After an appetizer of Week 0 games last weekend, ESPN has released their Week 1 FPI projections, with Auburn remaining high in the rankings, checking in at No. 11.

According to ESPN, The Football Power Index (FPI) is a measure of team strength that is meant to be the best predictor of a team’s performance going forward for the rest of the season. FPI represents how many points above or below average a team is. Projected results are based on 20,000 simulations of the rest of the season using FPI, results to date, and the remaining schedule. Ratings and projections update daily. FPI data from seasons prior to 2019 may not be complete.

In the latest projection, Auburn is expected to win seven games this season and has a 91.8% chance to win at least six games according to the FPI. What stands out the most about Auburn, is their remaining strength of schedule. Playing teams such as Alabama, Georgia, Texas A&M, and Mississippi State has given Auburn the toughest remaining schedule.

The FPI also predicts every game on Auburn’s schedule, including the season opener against Mercer. The Tigers open the week with a 99.2% chance to win on Saturday afternoon. Kickoff between Auburn and Mercer is set for 6 p.m. CT at Jordan-Hare Stadium.
